What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with the correction of malocclusion (misaligned teeth or jaws). This often involves the use of dental appliances (such as braces) to straighten the teeth, improve alignment, or correct bite issues.
Although orthodontics is more common with children and adolescents whose mouths, teeth and jaws are still developing, adults too may benefit from such treatments.
Aside from the obvious effects on aesthetics and self-confidence, misaligned teeth can be difficult to clean, leaving crevices or pockets where food, debris and bacteria can accumulate and cause issues such as periodontal (gum) disease and other problems associated with malocclusion.
Orthodontic treatment can either be completed either in-house by one of our general dentists trained in orthodontics or referred to a specialist orthodontist.
