Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth (or third molars) typically come through the gums between the ages of 17-25. Located at the back of your mouth, most adults have two upper and two lower wisdom teeth.

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. However, wisdom teeth are commonly ‘impacted’ when they do not have enough room to come through or if they do not develop normally. They are also located a long way back in the mouth, which makes cleaning them very difficult.

Common Reasons For Removal Of Wisdom Teeth:

  • Difficulty cleaning
  • Gum inflammation or infection due to food getting stuck, which may lead to a bad taste or odor
  • Jaw pain
  • As part of overall dental treatment
  • To prevent future issues

Potential Risks of Not Removing Wisdom Teeth:

  • Cavities in the wisdom tooth or the adjacent tooth
  • Recurrent infections, which may lead to cellulitis or facial swelling
  • Development of cysts
  • Damage to adjacent teeth

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common dental procedure. After careful assessment with an x-ray, our dentists at Lakeside Dental Studio will guide you through the right decision in managing your wisdom teeth. If the extraction appears to be straightforward, you may elect to have the wisdom tooth removed under local anaesthetic in the dental chair. If your wisdom tooth removal is likely to be complex (surgical removal) or if you need multiple teeth removed, you may choose to have this done at the clinic under Intravenous Sedation (sleep dentistry), or in hospital under GA (General Aneathesia). You may also be referred to a specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for this procedure.
